There are few things in this world that we get more excited about than Halloween and Haunted Attractions. Being able to enter a world-class haunted house that makes you feel like you stepped into a movie gives us a feeling that nothing else can compare to. For a moment, being able to suspend your cognitive reasoning and to fall into the illusion is just pure magic. While we are proud to help promote and guide our patrons to the biggest and best haunted attractions within 100 miles of Chicago, nearly all of those times, those are in commercial spaces, custom structures, or open fields with designating parking and staff to help us guide the way. There is a formal ticket-purchasing process and protocol that all of us are accustomed to now. But, what if the same style of walkthrough haunted house show was available… in someone’s house… and for free?

From the moment we arrived, outside line entertainment swarmed us, no different than any professional haunted attraction. With at least six to a dozen “roaming” actors including one of our favorites, “Skittles,” the scene matches the approach you would expect at any professional haunted attraction. While waiting in the line to enter, actors and actresses are dedicated, focused, and don’t break. Each has a practiced routine and effort that is both entertaining and relentless! While we had a short wait to get in, it felt like we blinked and we were being asked to walk inside.

Inside, the first room sets the show up with a perfect asylum introduction video. The two actors: a nurse and patient, are busy trying to distract you and provided to be one of our favorites this season! Through the rest of the attraction inside the house, rooms are tight, quick, and pack a punch! Feeling like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, we were whisked from scene to scene with actors at every twist and turn!

Yes, this is a residence, and rooms are smaller than other haunted attractions. But, the layout and décor are a part of the magic to help you instantly forget where you are at! There is even a claustrophobia tunnel inside! We left the last scene gasping for air and wondering how in the heck they were able to do everything they did!

The Bottom Line: Of course, much can be said for that old adage of “you get what you pay for.” But, this is absolutely the exception to the rule. While Nightmare Haunted House is a smaller show than all the big boys, the quality, passion, heart, technique, and dedication bled and sweat into this attraction is the exact same. Don’t let the lack of a cost make you think this is not worth your time. Make plans, tell your friends, and bring your enemies to an amazing attraction produced by an amazing group of people!
