In one of the most unassuming spots in a strip mall in Rockford, roughly 82 miles from Chicago, sits an up-and-coming haunted attraction by the name of Twisted Crypt. No stranger to those from the Rockford area, as well as those in the more rural parts of Illinois, Twisted Crypt is starting to gather a solid following from those heading west from Chicago.

The show at Twisted Crypt is designed with full interactivity. Instead of scenes that you pass by guests are immersed into the setting, stopped, and a performance takes place. Actors and patrons have time to connect, which increases the fear level by eliminating the option of simply hiding your head and rushing off to the next room. It was great to see this level of theatrical performance included in a haunted attraction!

Even before we entered the attraction, we had the chance to experience “Kevin” outside the main door. Thankfully, he was properly harnessed as his handler did his best to keep this maniac under control!

Just stepping foot into the waiting room is worth the price of admission alone! Here, scenes are encompassing as guests walk through the building walls, feel and see the thunder and lightning, and even meet some of the “family.” The scenes are scares start before the formal doors are even opened. The classic silent horror movie, Nosferatu, played on the castle wall, as we awaited our turn to enter.

Entering the formal attraction, we are welcomed with a nice video discussing the family, us joining them, and what we were about to enter. Even having experienced the show in previous years, we still love that there are two big shocks that still make wonder how the magician did the trick!

As we continued on our journey the actors and actresses were playful, hungry, and truly were in no rush for us to be on our way! They stop the traditional flow, taking you out of your comfort zone, and forcing you to really immerse yourself in their world. Calling themselves a family isn’t just part of the plot within the house, it’s the true feelings of the actors and actresses within this haunted attraction. With dedication like that inside, how do you not enjoy yourself and want to join in!

Some of our favorites were Maria, who was trying to figure out what to make for dinner in the kitchen, Cletus in the bayou, the swamp, the clowns, and of course, the doctor!

The Bottom Line: Twisted Crypt Haunted House is a theatrically-based fun and interactive show that will leave you jumping, laughing, and sharing stories on the way home! There’s no place to hide, as their style will allow actors and actresses full range to play and torment. While the drive from Chicago may be over an hour, this experience should be one to highly consider on your haunted travels! Thank you to the entire Twisted Crypt Crew for an amazing time!
