Sitting beneath the St. Pascal’s Parish, a 100+ year old church in Chicago, lies the tunnels and basements that few have had a chance to experience. But, once every year, they open the doors to the public for a rare glimpse beneath the streets of Chicago. This alone would be certainly worth the price of admission. But, the folks at St. Pascal’s give us a second treat: they make those tunnels haunted. We were certainly excited for another opportunity to see what they had in-store!
As we approached the entrance to St. Pascal’s, we were greeted by a number of clowns and roamers who helped us feel right at home. After some philosophical conversations with Cletus, and some “brick tricks” with Fatso the clown, we found our way through the courtyard, and down to the entrance of the catacombs.
Before we started our tour, we had a chance to meet an Egyptian queen character who had a pet snake wrapped around her arm. (Oh yes, it was real.) She warned us of the dangers we may encounter and gave us the rules and regulations when it came to her monsters living in the depths. When it was finally our turn, we entered the tunnels and were sent straight into the de-contamination chamber. After receiving our cleaning and cleansing, we continued through a number of famous Catacombs scenes including the “mirror maze,” boiler room, swamp, and butcher shop. But, our favorite certainly has to be the clown/jail cell/surprise room. With no spoilers, this certainly is one of their iconic performances!
Finally, we have to mention two of our favorites, Tri-Face and Bubbles the Clown! Both NEVER stopped performing, and ever interrupted other scenes to continue their routines! Bravo!
The bottom line: The night before we attended, The Catacombs hosted a record-breaking night of almost 1,000 people! Now in their 40th season, they only seem to be getting better, scarier, and helping to keep turning your dreams into nightmares. For the best combination of one part haunt and one part history, look no further than a journey into the Catacombs of St. Pascal!
