Since 2013, Massacre Haunted House in Montgomery, IL, has been a mainstay in the Haunted House Chicago Top 13. Beyond HHC, Massacre has also earned a plethora of awards and accolades from several other regional and national sources. So, it goes without saying that expectations are certainly set very high when we get the chance to experience this amazing production in-person.
From the outside, huge spotlights dance across the sky, summoning guests to join them. Like moths to a flame, patrons are lined up around the block in order to get a taste. The screams start immediately as actors Pedo the Clown, Stikky Mouse, and The Extractor fill the ground with a wave of sparks as they use slide attacks to catch their prey off-guard. Blending humor and horror, there isn’t a dull moment. (And this is before they have even entered the building!)
Once inside the main doors, Club Massacre is in full effect! A DJ is pumping out hits, while another cast of line entertainers ensure that no one is safe. After a photo session with Pennywise and Georgie, it was finally our opportunity to enter the darkness.
First, we are treated to an entirely new industrial section of the attraction. With sets that extend far past the eye can see, we felt like rats getting ready to run through a maze. Detail is oozing out of every orifice, screw, and bolt. There are textures on the floors, a fully-featured jungle, running water, and even a brand new swamp with actors that know how to play! But, the arched hallway leading to the church is certainly one of those trademark ‘Massacre features’ that just makes us giddy!
But, our favorite scene has to be in the “Sin” room. Smack-dab in the middle of the attraction, we found ourselves with an opportunity to hail Satan. Of course, who wouldn’t take that chance? But, before we were allowed to proceed, we were required to confess our biggest three sins… and this was a public confession! Stikky Mouse ran the confessional and couldn’t have been better at blending psychological torture with off-the-cuff hilarity.
The bottom line: Massacre Haunted House is a massive collage of all your favorite nightmares, wrapped up with a perfect bow. This place is huge, and although they claim there are only two haunts, we would argue there are almost four! Actors and actresses are crazy intense, and the décor is detailed down to the patterns on the sewer grates. Being at Massacre is a transportation to an entirely different world, and we couldn’t be happier! This is a definitely a must-see on our list!
