The 13th Floor Haunted House Chicago in Melrose Park, IL, is the namesake of a nationally-known chain of haunted attractions from the 13th Floor Entertainment Group. As one of their 22 attractions, this has been a mainstay on the HHC Top 13 since their arrival in the market in 2014. They received our Best New Haunted Attraction Award, and have a dozen other national awards to their credit.
But, let’s get into the details of the Chicago attraction that we get to experience. Because, here, it is ALL about the detail. These movie-like sets are tall, fully featured, and engulfing. They completely submerge you into their world with every corner you turn. If there was a Disneyworld of haunted attraction scenes, this might be a contestant. No aspect has been overlooked, and illusion becomes reality from the moment the front door closes.
This year’s first attraction, Creature Feature, featured a revised entrance and reworked guest path, which helped keep our team completely off-guard. Themed after all the scenes from your favorite monster movies, we traversed through the forests, church, and monastery. While the swamp feature was spectacularly executed by both design and the actress in the room, our absolute favorite room/area was the courtyard and apothecary. There’s more detail here than we will ever be able to see even if we got 50 tours through! We love when that kind of effort is put into a set! Bravo!
Newly revised for 2019, the second attraction was named, “The Other Side.” Themed after the “upside down” from Stranger Things, we were immediately thrown into a fog-filled world that was not quite our own. As we searched to try and find our escape, every nook and cranny contained a sense of discomfort. The wonderful actors were playful, and took advantage of our dulled senses taking every opportunity to scare and engage.
The bottom line: This is one of the “can’t miss” attractions in our market. With the years of experience behind their cast and crew, the end result will always be an amazing production that must be experienced each Halloween season! BUT, as good as they are in October, just wait for their holiday haunts in December, and other times throughout the year!
