Abandoned Haunted House Complex is located just north of the Illinois/Wisconsin border. Roughly about 68 miles north of Chicago, making it an easy drive with their location right off the Interstate. (In fact, you can see their building, several of their props, and the iconic neon lights from the road!) Parking is very easy and free, and finding your way to the ticket window is a breeze! Once you enter the grounds, you will have a chance to enter three different attractions, throw some axes, get some grub, pound a beverage, and stop by the giftshop for a momento!
The thrills start the minute you enter the midway. Abandoned has assembled a legendary crew of entertainers from different levels including long-time scare actors, theatrical actresses, and real bonefide circus-trained clowns! We at HHC have even awarded two of their highlight characters with our Jim Warfield Acting Award! The crew that calls the midway home are perfect at balancing entertainment, humor, and still creeping you out! You never know what you’re going to leave with, a balloon animal, fun fact, or possibly a face covered in lipstick (or worse). From porter potty party time to chainsaw antics and hijinks, it is nearly impossible to walk away from Abandoned and not think of them days and weeks later!
We tackled the two indoor attractions first, Hysteria and Ambush. They connect seamlessly, with a brief break in between. (To catch your breath.) Inside scenes are detailed, from the ground beneath you to the sometimes massive ceiling, and whisk patrons away fully immersing them into some of the most beautiful scene work we have witnessed! While the path winds and takes patrons up and down, around bends, and ducking for cover, some of the very memorial scenes include the plague scene (modeled after the Black Plague days in London), and the multi-level castle scenes! In Ambush, we wander through a variety of real-life horrors like a re-vamped church scene, and a hotel that we are dying to check into! One of our favorite observations has to do with the way the brilliant team here builds scenes and allows for opportunities to “preview” future scenes, and also look back at scenes patrons have already passed through! This foreshadowing amps up the excitement and gives you an opportunity to continue to watch these masters at work even once you have exited their domain.
After our journey through the indoors had ended, we lined-up for the final attraction, Stalker. This is a mostly outdoor attraction that has patrons dodging and weaving through the corn, various outlet buildings, and a host of obstacles keeping guests on their toes at all times. Primal fears have you on edge and ready for anything. Attacks come from all angles, you are not safe in any corner here. Remember: They can always see you, even if you can’t see them! The dark here feels to be almost impenetrable. Taking even one step in front of you feels like a feat in the density of the night! Our favorite features are the full dark ride that was 100% crafted by the team at Abandoned, as well as the corn crib/silo. New for 2023? The butcher shop has been relocated and revamped, and a REAL crematorium has been installed with live fire and the smell of human flesh! Who’s hungry?
Monsters of Note: Itchy, Scratchy, Emily, Bacon, Lydia, and anything Molly Peck portrays
The Bottom Line: Abandoned has progressed into one of the scariest, highly-detailed, versatile, and well-rounded productions in the Chicagoland area, if not the entire Midwest! From the moment you step foot on the grounds, the entertainment and your descent into madness begins! From their two indoor attractions, one outdoor attraction, and fully-featured midway, Abandoned is the full package to enjoy an entire evening of Halloween fun, laughter, and quite possibly a new pair of underwear!
